The good news is that James is reunited with his wife, Mina, newly gifted in magic; their newborn son; and Mina's sister. The impetus to stay strong amid the chaos has galvanized them, their friends, and their neighbors toward the goal of reconquering Earth for humanity. It's pledge allegiance and stick together-or die.
Now for the bad news: James isn't the only ruler gaining control. The monsters that weren't slaughtered during Orientation are now resettling on Earth and occupying every outlying territory. They abide by no laws, just killer instinct. They're coordinated, amassing, and getting hungry.
