The story begins in Russia in a small village inhabited by both Jewish and Gentile families, living together peacefully. Suddenly the Cossacks raid the village, rape the women, and burn the houses, to rid it of the Jews, and their whole world changes.

A rags to riches tale. When a family enjoys wealth, celebrity approbation and stylish living, the ingredients become heady, when one sibling determines to undermine the rights of the rest of the family by foul means.

Not stopping at witchcraft and devil-worship to achieve her ends, she uses her beauty and wiles to cheat and manipulate her way forward, until her ambition to take over her father's famous bookshop, and property empire is successful. In so doing, she reinvents herself as the only heir to the empire. Does she succeed?
