""Demos"" is a novel written by George Gissing, first published in 1886. The story is set in the late 19th century in London's East End, and follows the lives of a group of working-class people who are struggling to survive in a society that is divided along class lines. The main character, Richard Mutimer, is a young man who is determined to improve his lot in life. He becomes involved in socialist politics and begins to campaign for better working conditions and wages for the working class. Along the way, he falls in love with a young woman named Mary Barfoot, who shares his political beliefs. As Richard becomes more involved in the socialist movement, he begins to clash with the more moderate members of the group, who are not as committed to radical change as he is. Meanwhile, Mary struggles to balance her political activism with her desire for a more traditional domestic life. The novel explores themes of class struggle, social inequality, and the role of politics in society. It is a powerful critique of Victorian society and its treatment of the working class, and remains a classic of English literature to this day.Richard saw reason to deeply regret that the youth had been put to clerking in the first instance, and not rather trained for some handicraft, clerkships being about the least hopeful of positions for a working-class lad of small parts and pronounced blackguard tendencies. He came to the conclusion that even now it was not too late to remedy this error. 'Arry must be taught what work meant, and, before he came into possession of his means, he must, if possible, be led to devote his poor washy brains to some pursuit quite compatible with the standing of a capitalist, to acquire knowledge of a kind which he could afterwards use for the benefit of his own pocket. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations. Because we believe this work is culturally important, we have made it available as part of our commitment for protecting, preserving, and promoting the world's literature in affordable, high quality, modern editions, that are true to their original work.
