     When increased terrorist acts break out in countless locations around the globe, the CIO calls Gatewood back to duty, sending him to Rome, Italy to ask the Italian government to help America lessen the activities of one of his long-time enemies, the Durante Mafia crime family.  The Durante family has started shuttling illegal immigrants across the Mediterranean Sea to the shores of Italy, then hooking them on drugs and prostitution activities. 

     In Rome, Gatewood meets the beautiful and secretive Gianna Sabina, and an intense love affair develops.  While in Rome, Gatewood addresses the second part of his mission, that of monitoring the safety of the Pope of the Catholic Church in the city-state of the Vatican City, who is threatened by outside organizations that would like to see his trip to his place near God arrive sooner rather than later.
