Returning from Scartel to safety, Daro and Jalni are shaken by the death of a child. As Daro questions his faith in magic, Jalni decides that if he can face the past of a world, she can face her own, and slips away unseen. En route to Jerritol, followed by an old friend, she encounters Orto and decides to help him find the Tapestry of Tten.
