The History of Henry Esmond is a historical novel by the nineteenth-century English novelist and satirist. William Makepeace Thackeray. The book is written in the first person, supposedly by Henry Esmond. It describes Henry's life at Castlewood in the early eighteenth century, where he believes he is the illegitimate son of the deceased viscount of Castlewood.
