This is a comprehensive glossary of the culture, customs and folklore of mid-1800 America represented in The Adventures of Tom Sawyer by Mark Twain.  There are over 700 entries for English words, slang words, southern dialectal words, medical terms, religious terms and more that can’t commonly be found in an elementary dictionary. To accommodate the many different editions of Tom Sawyer, words are listed by chapter in the order they appear in the book with an alphabetical index in the back. Also included is an essay regarding figurative language to assist readers with Twain’s extensive use of figurative language.
