The Small House at Allington is a novel by Anthony Trollope, first published in 1864. It is the fifth book in the Chronicles of Barsetshire series, but can also be read as a standalone work. The novel is set in the fictional county of Barsetshire and revolves around the lives of the inhabitants of the small village of Allington.The story primarily focuses on the Dale family, who live in the Small House at Allington. The two sisters, Lily and Bell, are both in love with the same man, Adolphus Crosbie, who is a charming but unscrupulous young man. Crosbie is engaged to Lily, but he breaks off the engagement and marries a wealthy widow instead, leaving Lily heartbroken. Meanwhile, Bell falls in love with John Eames, a young man who has been in love with her for years, but she is hesitant to accept his proposal as she is still in love with Crosbie.The novel explores themes of love, loyalty, and social class.
